If your FileMaker 6 or earlier database is based on a single file, follow these easy steps to convert your solution. Note: FileMaker Pro 7, 8 and 8.5 files do not require conversion!
Close the file.
Launch FileMaker Pro.
Choose one of the following steps:
- If you see the Open New or Existing File dialog box, go to step 4.
- If you see the New Database dialog box, select Open an existing file and click OK.
- If you don't see a dialog box, choose File menu > Open.
In the Open dialog box, select the file to convert and click Open. The Conversion dialog box appears.
Rename your old file by entering the name you want (you can also accept the default option to add "Old" to the current file name) and click OK.
The Name Converted File dialog box appears. Enter the filename that you want for the new file.
Click Save to start the conversion.
Use a text editor such as Notepad (windows) or TextEdit (Mac OS) to open the Conversion.log file located in the folder that contains your converted database. Review the Conversion.log file for any problems, such as fields with invalid names, and correct any problems.
Test your converted file to make sure everything works as it did in the previous version. Please note that passwords are case-sensitive in FileMaker Pro. Make sure you enter your password exactly as it was created in the previous version before you convert.

That's it! You're ready to start using your converted FileMaker Pro solution.
